want to build a catalogue?
The Mother’s Write Membership also helps you grow a strong, professional sync catalogue so you can get your music ready for real opportunities. Through our partnership with MediaTracks and connections with record labels, members get access to sync briefs alongside clear, practical guidance on how to prepare and submit their music the way the industry expects. We walk you through the process step by step — from adding the right metadata, to understanding how to use keywords in briefs so your tracks are easier for music supervisors to find. You’ll also learn how to export, organise, and properly label your stems and track files, so everything is clean, professional, and delivery-ready. Our aim is to make the sync world feel less overwhelming and help you confidently build a catalogue that is searchable, organised, and ready for real placement opportunities.
here’s where to start
Understanding the keywords in a brief is a huge part of being successful in sync and writing opportunities, because they tell you exactly what the person commissioning the music is looking for. Keywords often describe the style, tempo, mood, energy, and instrumentation of a track, and learning how to read them properly can make the difference between a song being selected or passed over. For example, a brief might ask for something up-tempo, indie pop, female vocal, guitar-driven, uplifting, which gives clear clues about the speed of the track, the overall feel, and the instruments that should lead the production and songwriting. When you understand how to translate these words into musical choices — such as tempo range, drum groove, sound palette, lyric and melody choice and arrangement — you can write with much more focus and confidence. By being a Mother’s Write member, you get industry insights (thanks to MediaTracks) on how to break briefs down, choose the right sounds, and produce tracks that match what music supervisors, labels, and sync companies are actually searching for, giving your submissions a much stronger chance of success.

UNDERSTANDING ROYALTY SPLITS
Understanding sync royalty splits is an important part of building a sustainable career in music, because it helps you know exactly how you get paid when your song is placed in TV, film, advertising, or games. In most sync deals, the income is divided into two halves — the writer’s share (50%) and the publisher’s share (50%). The writer’s share belongs to the songwriter or composer and is paid through your performing rights organisation, while the publisher’s share goes to whoever controls the publishing, which could be you, a publisher, or a company representing the track. For example, if you co-write a song with one other writer and you agree on a 50/50 split, each writer would receive 25% writer’s share, and the remaining 50% publishing would either be split the same way or go to a publisher if one is involved. When a song is synced, there is usually an upfront sync fee, which is negotiated depending on the project, and then ongoing performance royalties if the music is broadcast. This is why agreeing splits early and registering songs correctly is so important.
At Mother’s Write, we guide members through how splits work, how to agree percentages fairly, and how to make sure your songs are registered properly so you receive the royalties you’ve earned.
At Mother’s Write, we help members understand how these splits work, what percentage you should expect as a writer, how deals are usually structured, and how to make sure your work is properly registered so you receive the royalties you’re entitled to.
